Aitutaki Landscapes
Situated some 220 kms north of Rarotonga, (less than one hour’s flight with Air Rarotonga) Aitutaki has a population nearing 2000 residents.
Aitutaki is a partial atoll with major sand cay features, together with a highly eroded volcanic crater inland of the Pacific Resort Aitutaki. Several islets located within the lagoon are true atolls, while motu Rakau, popularly referred to as “Survivor island” after the reality television series which was filmed on Aitutaki, is basaltic rock in origin.
Only Aitutaki, the main island within this formation of islets, is permanently inhabited. The remaining islets receive daily visitors from lagoon-cruise vessels. One Foot and Honeymoon islets are the most popular motu used by day-trippers, swimmers, and snorkelling enthusiasts and the perfect setting for wedding vows to be exchanged. A large proportion of the Aitutaki lagoon is retained as a nature reserve including marine and island ecosystems.
